“For the Love of ________,” uses self-portraiture to explore individuality by re-staging found images from vintage subculture and hobby magazines. I spend time collecting and pouring over these pre-internet-era publications to find images that speak to me. I then collect costumes and props from eBay, craigslist, and thrift stores to recreate the scene with myself as the enthusiast. This process allows me to literally try on these fascinations while I imagine what compels the subjects to go to such great lengths for their individual interests and expressions. I’m fascinated by the relationship between the pure enjoyment of a hobby and the motivation to connect to a group with the same interest, specifically before internet culture.
