My current photographic project, “For the Love of ________”, uses self-portraiture to explore individuality by re-staging found images from vintage subculture and hobby magazines. I spend time collecting and pouring over these pre-internet era publications to find images that speak to me. I then collect costumes and props from eBay, craigslist, thrift stores, and the like to recreate the scene with myself as the enthusiast. This process allows me to literally try on these fascinations, as I imagine what compels the subjects to go to such great lengths for their individual interests. I’m fascinated by the relationship between pure enjoyment of a hobby and the motivation to connect to a group of people who relate to one another, specifically before the days of the internet.
